The 30-second answer

Most dogs are happiest on a bed that's8–12 inches longer than their body (nose to base of tail), with just enough room to stretch — but not so much that they feel exposed.

Your dog's weight Bed size (top surface) Typical KSIIA size*
Up to 15 lbs 20–24″ Puppy Bed S/M
15–30 lbs 29–30″ S / M
30–50 lbs 35–36″ M
50–70 lbs 41–44″ L
70–90 lbs 47–48″ L+
90+ lbs 53″+ XL

*Quick reference only — always confirm the exact dimensions on each product page, and measure your dog using the steps below.

Step 1: Measure length (the number that matters most)

With your dog standing normally, measure from thebase of the nose to the base of the tail. (Not to the tip — tails don't need mattress.)

Step 2: Weigh, don't guess

Lift your dog while standing on a bathroom scale, then subtract your own weight. Or use your last vet-visit weight.

Step 3: Watch how she sleeps

This is the step everyone skips — and it changes the answer.

  • The Curler (nose-to-tail donut): add 6–8 inches to her length. Curlers feel safest in snug beds with raised rims — a nest-style bed like our Cloud Nest is made for them.
  • The Sprawler (flat on her side, legs everywhere): add 10–12 inches. Sprawlers need rectangle real estate, not walls.
  • The Leaner (back against something): pick a bed with a bolster or place it against a wall or sofa.
  • The Floor-is-Fine type (ignores beds entirely): you don't have a size problem, you have a comfort problem — see [Why does my dog sleep on the cold floor?]

Rule of thumb: when in doubt, size up one step — but don't jump two. A bed that's too big feels exposed to anxious dogs; a bed that's too small gets abandoned within a week.

Sizing for puppies

Puppies grow fast, but don't buy the adult bed yet — oversized beds make house-training harder and feel less secure. Instead:

  1. Buy for her current weight + one size step, or
  2. Choose our [Puppy Bed for Small Dogs] line and upgrade at ~6 months.
  3. Place the puppy bed inside or beside the future big bed zone, so the transition is a location she already trusts.

(Cloud Nest™ and CloudWarm™ sizing for puppies will be published at launch — join the waitlist and we'll send the chart.)

Crate bed sizing

Crate pads should match your crate's floor dimensions exactly (no bunching against the door). Standard crate sizes match our crate beds:

FAQ

How much bigger should a dog bed be than the dog?

Add 6–8 inches for curlers and 10–12 inches for sprawlers, measured nose to base of tail. When between sizes, choose the larger one.

Do dogs prefer bigger or smaller beds?

Most dogs prefer a snug fit with a little stretch room. Anxious and young dogs especially settle faster in nest-style beds with raised rims; only confident sprawlers use every inch of an oversized mat.

What size dog bed for a French Bulldog?

Most French Bulldogs (20–28 lbs) are curlers and love a 29–30″ nest bed; sprawlers are happiest on 35–36″. Frenchies overheat easily — breathable arctic plush or a self-warming bed used in a cool room both work well.

What size bed for a Labrador or Golden Retriever?

Adults (55–80 lbs) need 44–48″. If yours sleeps sprawled on her side, go 47–48″.

My puppy will be big — should I just buy the big bed now?

We advise against it. Oversized beds slow house-training and feel insecure to puppies. Size for now, upgrade around 6 months.

What if the size is wrong?

Every KSIIA bed carries our size-swap support and 90-day return policy — see returns.
